What Order Should You Clean Your Kitchen In?

For a routine kitchen clean, start by putting food away and clearing dishes, then clean accessible surfaces and appliance exteriors. Finish the sink after the washing is done, and leave the floor until last. This order helps you avoid wiping the same counter twice or dropping crumbs onto a freshly cleaned floor.

Whether you have a compact Peterborough apartment kitchen or a busy family kitchen, use the sequence below as a starting point. Adjust it to your surfaces and the work that actually needs doing. Deal with spills and food contamination promptly rather than waiting for the next step in a checklist.

Before you start: choose the right products and tools

Check the care instructions for your countertop, cabinet finish, appliances and flooring. A product suitable for one surface may not suit another. Have clean cloths or paper towels ready, along with a suitable floor tool and the products you need.

Read product labels, use the protection they specify, keep the room ventilated and never mix household chemical products. Store them in their original containers away from children and pets. These precautions follow Health Canada's household chemical safety guidance.

1. Put food away and deal with dishes

Return food to appropriate storage before starting the room clean. Clear plates, mugs and utensils from the counter, then wash them or load the dishwasher according to its instructions. Put unrelated items back where they belong so you can reach the surfaces beneath them.

If you wash dishes by hand, leave final sink cleaning until afterward. Keep clean dishes away from the area you are using for dirty items. Address anything contaminated by raw food separately rather than spreading it around the kitchen with a general wiping cloth.

2. Work from accessible upper surfaces to counters

Wipe reachable cabinet fronts, handles and ledges that need attention, using the care method for their finish. Then work around the kitchen in one direction so it is easier to remember what you have covered. Do not climb on counters or unstable furniture to reach high areas.

Move small counter items only when you can do so safely, clean beneath them and return them once the surface is ready. Avoid soaking seams, edges and electrical areas. Follow appliance instructions before cleaning around cords or controls.

3. Clean appliance exteriors and the stovetop

Check that the stovetop is off and cool before cleaning. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for the surface, suitable products and removable parts. Do not assume a scrubber suitable for a sink is suitable for a glass cooktop or stainless steel finish.

Wipe accessible appliance doors and handles as needed. Treat oven interiors, refrigerator interiors and heavy grease buildup as separate tasks with their own instructions and time allowance. You do not need to turn every routine kitchen reset into a full appliance clean.

4. Give food preparation surfaces their own attention

Remove visible residue from counters and other preparation areas using a method suitable for the surface. For food-contact hygiene, follow Health Canada's food safety guidance, including sanitizing countertops, cutting boards and utensils before and after food preparation with a kitchen sanitizer used as directed. Follow the label's contact time and rinsing directions.

Use fresh cleaning materials when moving from dirty areas to food preparation surfaces. Health Canada recommends paper towels for kitchen surfaces, or changing dishcloths daily. A cloth used on a bin should not be your next counter-cleaning cloth.

5. Finish the sink and waste area

Once dishes and other washing are finished, remove debris from the sink and clean the basin, tap and surrounding area using the fixture manufacturer's care instructions. Give the waste-bin lid and accessible exterior attention with separate cleaning materials, then wash your hands.

Replace a bin liner if needed. Do not reach into waste to press it down or handle unknown sharp objects. Leave drain problems and appliance repairs to the appropriate professional rather than adding chemical combinations to a routine clean.

6. Clean the floor last

Remove loose crumbs and debris with a broom or vacuum suitable for the flooring. Then address marks using the floor manufacturer's recommended cleaning method. Keep the amount of moisture appropriate for the material and keep the walking route clear while the floor dries.

The floor is last because counter cleaning, dishes and emptying the bin can all add crumbs or splashes. If a spill creates a slipping risk, deal with it immediately instead of waiting until the end.

Your kitchen reset checklist

  1. Food stored and dishes dealt with.
  2. Reachable fronts, handles and ledges checked.
  3. Counters cleared and cleaned.
  4. Cool stovetop and appliance exteriors cleaned as needed.
  5. Food preparation surfaces given appropriate hygiene attention.
  6. Sink and waste area finished with separate cleaning materials.
  7. Floor cleared, cleaned and allowed to dry.
